Subjects: Civil War, 1861-1865
Description: This letter is from an auditor in the Treasury Department, who is contacting Edwin Havens over the issue of full payment being made to Havens after his discharge. The letter roughly reads, "Sir: Your claim for pay under act of June 3-1884 Bounty and Final Pay, as Sgt. And Lt. Cos. “A” and “I” 7th Mich. Cav., has been examined… You were enrolled Sept 12-1862 for three years, mustered in Oct. 13-1862, promoted to 2a.Lt. June 23-1865 and mustered-out with company Dec. 15-1865. Under the provisions of the acts of June 3-1884 and Feb. 3-1887 you are recognized as 1st Lt. from June 24-1865-but you have been paid in full the pay of a 2a. Lt. which is the same as that of a 1st Lt in Cav. You were paid on final payment to Dec. 24-1865 in accordance with the payment to your company. You were paid $100 bounty as of July 22-1861 and no claim for additional bounty as of July 28-1866, having been filed till after July 1-1880, payment thereof is barred by limitations of statute. Duplicate receipts herewith enclosed. There was no discharge certificate, or order filed in this case.”
