  Camp Near Fredrick Vir
  Dec [19?]. 62
        Dear Childe
        I roat you a few
lines when on the Batelfields
but knowing that you will
feal anxious I haste to let
you knowe my preseant Saftey
we w crost the River a
litel be low Fredrick one
week ago to day ware met
with a warm reception
they gave us a warm
reception with Shot &
Shal thare was [illegible in original] stru
ck in our Reg but our
Baterey soon silenst them
we ware on the extreme
left the next morning
we ware caled to supporte
a Batery they sheld

a piecf piece of woods near
the River and drove a few
Cavelry out then our Reg
ware ordered to th take
the woodes which they said
we did in good order. then
another Batery came on
and Began to shel the
hils amile or more of
and the Enemey returnd
the fire we our Reg & the
seventh Wisconisin Suppo
rted our Baterey thare
was sharpe fiering on
bouth sides But no [illegible in original]

we lay thare in an
open field under thare
fire the [moste?] of the
day and untill late
in the eavening
after dark they gave us
grape and Canister

thare were a few slight

eight kild and 18 wounded
[illegible in original] the day we lay
on the field untill
Monday night thare was
verey litel fiering on
thre the left the [two?]
last days the Batel
but you will know
more about the Batel
before this [3 words illegible in original]
I can tel you we fel
back with the rest
of the Armey and are
in camp acrost the
river oposit Fredrick
but expect to moove soon
sum say we are to go
into winter quaters but
that is uncertain but
I hope it is [trew?] for

our shelter tents are
rather [arey?] but I must
close and you must
excuse my Pencil marks
for I have lost my Pen
and I hate to troubel
other foulks I am well
and hope this will
finde you enjoying the same
good by dear one
